Teaching Development Studies and Development Management in DPPThe Open University teaches at a distance by supported open learning. Courses comprise written texts, audio-visual materials and the support of a tutor (Associate Lecturer) who guides students through the materials, conducts tutorials, marks assignments and provides feedback. There is increasing use of electronic tuition and use of online communication. Undergraduate TeachingSince its first undergraduate course in development 1983, Development Studies at the Open University has grown as an area of teaching and research, with contributions from all Faculties and a wide network of contacts and collaborators in Britain and overseas. Undergraduate Development Studies now forms a compulsory element in the BA and BSc in International Studies through the course, U213 International Development: Challenges for a World in Transition. U213 is available to anyone resident in the UK and other European Union countries, and over 500 students are registered on this course every year. As well as being a compulsory core course on the BA/BSc in International Studies , it is a designated course in degrees in Technology, Environmental Studies and Social Sciences, and a constituent course for the Diploma in Environment and Development, the Diploma in Gender and Development, and the Diploma in Health and Social Welfare. For students new to distance learning or to development issues there is an access pack called Preparing for Development. U213 can also be studied as a stand alone course.
