Ray Ison

Professor in Systems

Appointed Professor of Systems at the Open University in 1994, my research and scholarship spans the biophysical and social and is primarily interdisciplinary and collaborative. My recent research within the Environment Agency (England & Wales) has effected systemic, social learning approaches to the implementation of river basin planning and the European Water Framework Directive. We demonstrate how social learning can be employed as an alternative governance mechanism for managing in complex situations, particularly water catchments and other multiple stakeholder settings (also relevant to climate change adaptation). Through the PersSyst Project I have been involved in a systemic inquiry into the means to build systems thinking and practice capability in the Open University itself.
