Jane is an environmental policy analyst with strong interests in educational for sustainable development. She received her PhD from the Open University in 1991, for a study of interest group relationships in the nuclear power sector at the time of electricity privatisation. Until 2007 she was Principal Lecturer in Environmental Policy at the University of Gloucestershire, initiating and coordinating the university’s link with Kaliro Teachers’ College in Uganda. Between 2007 and 2009 she worked for the Bulmer Foundation, a Hereford-based sustainable development charity, leading their postgraduate programmes in Sustainable Development Advocacy. In 2009 Jane returned to the OU as Staff Tutor in the south west.
Jane’s research most recently has been in the field of transformational learning in development education.
Jane was awarded a Teaching Fellowship by the University of Gloucestershire in 2005 and in 2009 achieved Associate Fellowship of the Staff and Educational Development Association (SEDA). She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
In 2004 she authored the textbook ‘Environmental Policy’ for Routledge and the second edition will be published in 2010.
At Gloucestershire, Jane was responsible for the development and delivery of a broad range of environment and geography courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level, including an annual field class to Uganda. She was actively involved in the university’s CETL, the Centre for Active Learning, and co-edited a handbook of good practice for university teachers seeking to embed sustainability education across the curriculum, ‘Greener by Degrees’.
She is a member of the course team for U116 ‘Environment: Journeys through a Changing World’ and is contributing to the team developing the replacement course for U213 ‘International Development: Challenges for a World in Transition’.
