Welcome to Development Policy and Practice (DPP) DPP is the main centre in the Open University for teaching and research in International Development. DPP promotes critical debate and analysis of international development through:
DPP has a full-time core group and associates from other departments within and outside the university. The group combines diverse interests and expertise (from both social science disciplines such as anthropology, economics, geography, politics and sociology, and science and technology) and a wide range of research and practical experience from Africa, Latin America, South Asia, and Eastern Europe. DPP teaches Development Studies at undergraduate level and a Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma and MSc in Development Management (GDM). Staff supervise full and part-time PhDs and there is a lively research student body within the group. DPP has a strong research culture which is based around inter-disciplinary, policy focused work on novel dimensions of development. Key amongst these are biotechnology and development, Asia’s role in globalisation, North-South partnerships and social learning, transnational non-governmental networks, and management and institutional change. DPP is the shared home of the ESRC Centre for Social and Economic Research on Innovation in Genomics (Innogen) with Edinburgh University, the Asian Drivers network and Commodities. The effectiveness of DPP is enhanced by its networks within the university and outside it. Within the university, it is a founding member of the International Development Centre (IDC), which supports international partnerships and promotes research in social and human development, and of the university-wide research centre, Innovation, Knowledge and Development, which brings together academics from Social Sciences, Technology and the Open University Business School. Outside the Open University, DPP works with a wide range of academics and development practitioners in the UK and other parts of the world.
